Shell Beans

 Hi ladies,

I am not going to even attempt posting a picture right now.  Shell beans are a limited season vegetable here.  I have to watch the garden carefully to catch the beans when the seed is fully formed but not dried out yet.  Then I pick the ones who have lots of pink in them and the pod feels like there are beans in it.  Allen and I think they are a delicacy but my farmers won't even touch them.

 

If you are curious as to how they look google tongue of fire beans or cranberry beans.  Actually almost any bean grown for  dry beans will work.  Just pick them before they dry out.  Lima beans are a good comparison.  We generally eat those before the seed dries out.


Shell beans are delicious boiled in a little water, partially drained if necessary, and then heated again with cream or milk on them,  We eat them on mashed potatoes.  If I have a great abundance of them I also put them in vegetable soup.


Ulriche, my husband's family came from Germany with pea bean seed.  I grew them for years but lost the seed when I had a difficult summer pregnancy.  Have you ever heard of pea beans?  Are they available at your farmer's markets?  Can any of you other ladies find them?  I have to admit that I go to few farmer's markets.  What my daughter and I grow in the garden at the farm usually keeps us busy.

  1. I am lost in translation. I know peas, eaten fresh as green peas and dried in yellow or green. And I know beans and beans which are called Turkish peas for example. It's hard to get seed you can multiply on your own.

Ellen, thank you for suggesting Fresh Shell Beans for this week...I have learned so much about them, and I think all the ladies in the group enjoyed trying to figure it out and find recipes for their families. Such fun...this is why I like cooking in a group, I learn so much. Eating them with a little cream on mashed potatoes sounds really good, I will try that, thanks for the suggestion.

  4. I have never heard of beans on potatoes, but I am sure it would be good! We love beans of most any kind.
